Chief Officer Coaching

Chief Officer & Executive Director Coaching

At C-suite level, leaders manage the expectations of a diverse range of internal and external organisation stakeholders. They need to have high levels of competence in a complex range of skills and be able to operate consistently and with great resilience in a VUCA environment. Our Chief Officer Coaching programmes can support specific leadership development and business requirements.

At times, it can be a highly challenging and lonely experience. The opportunity to work with a professional high-calibre leadership coach who understands organisational and business context quickly, who supports the client in clarifying their thinking at a deep level in a short time-frame, whilst retaining a systemic focus, is invaluable. External coaches at this level must have gravitas, credibility and strong personal presence to enable an open, challenging and beneficial dialogue with the chief officer or executive director client, irrespective of the complexity of issues presented. Each one of the emintell master level coaches have these attributes together with extensive business experience and understanding.

“Coaching gave me the time and space to deeply reflect on my leadership style, presence, impact and purpose. As a result of which I am: adapting my style of leadership to a more conscious and mindful one; moving away from a directive style to an empowering and mentoring one. Learning to be patient and accommodating of others; in particular an awareness of pace, personality, perspective, communication style and varying needs. Becoming even more authentic in my leadership approach, taking more risks with utilising my genuine presence especially with stakeholder relationships.”

Ground Clarify & Innovate Programme – For Chief Officers, Executive Directors and Senior Leadership Teams

Programme Focus and Aim

This coaching programme is aimed at supporting senior leaders to engage in a series of deep, meaningful, and high-value conversations about what is possible for their business as it transitions into a different future. To tease out these possibilities and discuss what this might mean in terms of  future business vision, mission, and purpose. Clarifying the “modus operandi” of the business moving forward and the optimum strategy to realise this. Gaining consensus and “buy in”  to revised or new business purpose and direction, from business stakeholders.

The coaching can be effected either for the chief officer or executive director individually, in pairs coaching, for example between a chairperson and a chief executive, or a chief executive and the chief finance officer, in small groups up to and including the whole senior leadership or management team – see our team coaching service for more details.

When is this programme appropriate?

At any point, in the life of a business or organisation when it reaches a significant crossroads, brought about either by significant world, life or business events. A time when deep clarity of thinking is required, and informed decisions need to be made about both the sustainability and future direction of the business by senior leadership and key business stakeholders. The post Covid-19 adjustment phase is one such significant situation. Other potential situations include when a primary founder or co-founders decide to exit a business, a possible merger or takeover is being considered, or seismic economic or industry sector disruption occurs which requires a fundamental re-think on the current purpose and positioning of the business and its products or services. In these and other pivotal situations, securing expert level coaching support for a Chief Officer, or in pairs with another chief business stakeholder can be invaluable to optimise clarity of thinking and rationale in wider strategic business conversations with leadership teams and senior business stakeholders.

Core Content

  1. Contracting phase –  where emintell and the client gain mutual clarity about requirements, context, expectations, and desired outcomes. We discuss our coaching approach, utilising the coaching framework, ensuring it aligns with the overall client coaching aim and specific objectives. Understanding of other contractual issues to be addressed, including the number of parties to the coaching, coaching delivery methods, evaluation and ROI measurement. In this phase, the parties will attend to the business services and coaching contracts required, including NDA’s, where appropriate.
  2. Core coaching delivery phase – a series of 90 minute coaching conversations which will be framed around a set of enquiry questions and associated activities. For this programme, a minimum of four 90 minute sessions will be included, rising to a maximum of eight depending on complexity and requirement.
  3. Feedback and review – after each coaching event, and at the close of the programme, both the client and the emintell coach will garner feedback both on the quality of the process and the specific impact of the coaching approach. This continual review and feedback cycle is core to emintell’s commitment to ensure the highest possible impact and results for the client.
  4. Retainer option   – the client may wish to retain the services of emintell, for a period of time, after the primary coaching programme has completed. Please contact emintell to discuss available options.

Coaching Delivery

Leadership coaching sessions can be delivered individually either virtually via MS Teams or other secure communications platforms, on a face to face basis (conditions permitting), or by phone, whichever is the preferred method for the client.

Currently, the sole personal delivery method available is “walk and coach” where the coaching takes place in a large green space, park or similar where current social distancing requirements can be adhered to. This approach can be extremely beneficial for some clients, as walking and spending time in a natural environment outside a normal office or home office environment, enhances creative thinking, deep enquiry, awareness and honesty. Contact emintell today for more details of coaching delivery options available.

Coaching Options

  • Shadow Coaching – This enables a leadership coach to effectively shadow a leader or aspiring leader for an agreed period, in-situ in their role. The objective is for the coach to gain high levels of awareness about the client’s leadership style, by placing themselves in the client’s real system, and then feeding back what they notice about the client’s style of leadership in different situations. Situations will include board or similar level meetings, presentations, town halls, and may also include informal gatherings at lunch or in the business canteen. It can include external facing situations including shareholder and investor meetings and other events involving PR and media communications. This shadow coaching can be extended to include other members of the leadership team and is particularly useful when leadership team wants to unearth some systemic dysfunctional behaviours that are limiting or otherwise impeding top performance. As current conditions prevail, currently shadow coaching can only be delivered virtually. This entails the leadership coach observing the client during virtual key leadership team, Board, and other business meetings.
  • 180 & 360 Degree Feedback – This offers the chief officer or other senior leadership gain clear insight into perception and impact in key areas of the business. It can be effected either informally through a series of short interviews with key business stakeholders or a more formal process where specific detailed competencies under key Leadership headlines are distributed to a range of feed-backers and the results are collated, analysed and formed into a substantive document. This feedback then forms the catalyst for commencing the coaching conversations. emintell has extensive experience in design and delivery of both options.
