The NHS - Senior Leadership Coaching
The coaching client is part of an orthopaedic team in a specialist NHS trust hospital centre. At the time of engagement, he had been working in the role for several years. It was agreed that profiling on emotional intelligence and his strengths would be of benefit to him within the leadership context in which he was working.
The client clearly loves his work, especially the outcomes he achieves for his patients and working with his theatre team. He experienced some challenges in influencing and in leadership impact. He had had little exposure to formal leadership and management development at this point in his professional career.
It was agreed that profiling on emotional intelligence and his strengths would be of benefit to him within the leadership context in which he was working. The results from these two profiles, using EQi testing and Realise Strengths 2 profiling acted as the platform to start the coaching programme.
Over the course of the coaching programme, the client explored his emotional intelligence, strengths and sensitivities, which helped him build his awareness and understanding of his communication responses. The client realised, that he too was a leader within the unit. He possesses some top leadership skills and talent, especially in relation to his emotional intelligence, empathy and trustworthiness. He demonstrates these skills through his integrity and care of both his patients and team supporting his work.
His engagement in the process throughout, especially to practise new approaches of interpersonal communication helped him obtain the following outcomes.
A leading surgeon has increased levels of responsibility for actively influencing and challenging policy and processes within the department with a view to continual improvement. He recognises his leadership style presence and impact significantly better. His influence, communication and commitment to improve internal practices and process, has resulted in improvements, both to patient experiences and to overall efficiencies within the department.
