TUI Destination Experiences
The TUI group was undergoing major restructuring, with all services, travel agencies, hotels, planes and cruise ships being brought under the global TUI brand. We were commissioned to provide team leadership development support for the global TUI HR team as part of the two day event, held at one of TUI’s flagship hotels, in La Palma Spain.
The global transformational change entailed significant changes to both the structure and operation of the HR teams globally. The senior leadership team decided to host an event enabling the top two layers of leadership teams to meet face to face for the first time. The business part of the agenda was to discuss the implications of the restructuring for management of the HR teams on the ground in each region.
Our commissioned brief was to devise a programme of team leadership development support utilising a team coaching approach, to dovetail with the main business agenda. In particular the required objectives were to:
We designed our overall approach and input in close collaboration with the global head of HR, for TUI’s 20 most senior HR leaders worldwide:
The exploration of team member strengths and vulnerabilities on the first day, proved both popular and impactful. We created an environment where team members were able to have open and honest conversations about the implications of mutual strengths and vulnerabilities; how these differences impacted on how they worked together. The session brought moments of real honesty with humour, as individual members recognised both their own and other team members’ personal strengths and more vulnerable areas.
These senior leaders were then able to consider how to work together effectively – in particular, how to use key strengths and unrealised strengths, to optimise the delivery of key workstreams. The sessions on personal resilience and cross-cultural communications, delivered on the second day, also had a positive impact. The participants learned practical ways to both grow and maintain their personal resilience. They also engaged creatively in understanding the practical implications of differences in cross-cultural communications.
The two-day event, the first for the new global HR team was considered a great success which supported the cohesion and bonding of the top new global HR teams and enabled them to establish some good working practices, increased mutual understanding and integrated some great tools for self-care and maintaining resilience, especially in times of high pressure and change.
