The Natural Environment Research Council UK
The Natural Environment Research Council is the UK’s largest funder of independent environmental science, training and innovation, delivered through universities and research centres. It funds excellent, world-leading research across the environmental sciences. It’s vision is to “To place environmental science at the heart of responsible management of our planet.” Their innovation funding brings researchers together with research users, to harness the best people, skills and information to address business and societal needs.
In 2005, at the time of initial engagment with emintell, NERC had embarked on a major long-term transformation programme, beginning the process of transitioning the seven research centres into independent governing bodies. As part of this, NERC started an ambitious Leadership Development Programme, to equip world leading scientists, business managers and other science leaders with the Leadership skills required to lead in their respective science centres, “fit for purpose” for the 21st century, aligning with vision, purpose and strategic aims. emintell were one of a number of coaching organisation requested by NERC to provide senior leadership coaching and 360-degree feedback as a cornerstone of this transformation programme.
emintell intially provided 360 degree feedback and leadership coaching to science leaders based at the British Geological Survey (BGS), Keyworth and Edinburgh. This work expanded over the years to include leaders at other reseach centres accross the UK. Over the course of the business relationship, emintell has provided 360 degree support, leadership and team coaching to over 200 science leaders and business and facilities management based at NERC HQ, the BGS UK & BGS Northern Ireland, the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH), The National Oceonagrapy Centre (NOC), and the National Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (NCAS). emintell also has experience of delivering senior leadership and team coaching on behalf of SAMS (Sea and Marine Sciences) based in Oban, Scotland The duration of the business relationship attests to emintell’s deep understanding of context and infrasturcture, together with delivery of consistently excellent outcomes. The major part of the leadership coaching and 360 degree feedback has been delivered to the British Geology Survey (BGS)
Over the course of a fifteen year business relationship, emintell’s Elaine Akester has provided transformational leadership coaching and 360-degree feedback to more than 50 BGS leaders – including the Chief Scientist, the Chief Operating Officer, the organisation’s Director of BGS in Northern Ireland, and the head of Communications and Engagement.
