Secure Accommodation Network (SANS)

Conference Speaking, Annual Organisational Conference. Personal & Team Resilience & Wellbeing, Mindfulness & Development of Stress Management Techniques

The Secure Accommodation network is the body responsible for the maintenance and development and promotion of 15 secure children’s homes based throughout the UK, which provide care and support to young people between the ages of 10 and 17 years of age, who have been referred either by local authorities or by the justice system.

The network provides a critical and invaluable service, providing a holistic and systematic approach to supporting young people in their care, developing their personal and emotional skills and confidence as well as providing education and pathways to meaningful career and work options.

As part of the annual conference held in Durham the senior management were keen to include some relevant CPD sessions for staff members, to support and develop themselves.  In particular they wanted two separate facilitated sessions, one on the theme of personal resilience and the other introducing people attending to the concept of mindfulness as a technique in supporting focus and emotional control.

What we did

In consultation with the client we designed two separate sessions, a morning session on growing resilience and wellbeing and an afternoon session introducing mindfulness theory and practise to the participants.

Session One – Growing resilience and wellbeing

This session included the following items: –

  • Exploration of what personal resilience is and its core components
  • Context and relevant academic research
  • Overview of the pressure performance model
  • Overview of the Optimal personal resilience model
  • Approaches for flexible cognitive and emotional responses
  • Breathing techniques
  • Relevance of control and influence in building resilience and wellbeing
  • Relevance of self-compassion
  • Reflections on learning for the future

Session Two – Introduction to Mindfulness

This afternoon session introduced participants to the core principles underpinning mindfulness, where and how it developed as well as integrating opportunities to practise some easy mindful meditations, both formally and informally.

Both sessions were delivered in a highly engaging and inclusive fashion, making both topics accessible to all who were present. Additionally, we integrated the use of practical handout and resources to points of additional information for both topics.
