Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Services

Conference speaking, advanced coaching skills delivery for inaugural coaching conference for the Fire & Rescue Service

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue protect more than one million people who live, work, visit or travel through the county every day.  A team of over 1,100 people support this work from a variety of locations. As part of an on-going organisational development programme, the organisation has embarked on an ambitious plan to integrate advanced coaching – both as a leadership and management approach, and within a more formal coaching framework.

To support this, it was decided to host an internal coaching conference, incorporating coaching sessions for professional development. The aim was to provide opportunities for practising and aspiring coaches to develop their skills and confidence, in a supportive environment.

What We Did

emintell designed and presented two sessions at NFRS’s first internal coaching conference. Elaine Akester led the sessions on:

  • Advanced questioning techniques – exploring the purpose, benefits and impacts of questioning in both formal and informal coaching. Differences between question types; incisive, pre-supposition, powerful and enquiry, and silent incisive questions. Exploring context and use of questions for optimum impact. Understanding purpose and use of silence in coaching.
  • Positive language – exploring the purpose and benefits of positive language and an appreciative enquiry approach in coaching conversations. This included sharing important research on the science behind negative bias and the impact of positive language on brain chemistry.

Both sessions were delivered in a highly engaging and informative style. Elaine used her extensive coaching experience to frame the delivery and bound the sessions with opportunities for periods of practise and feedback, to support new learning and confidence building.

Quotes Block

“In both sessions, Elaine used a highly facilitative style, sharing her in-depth coaching experience, adapting to the needs of the participants and ensuring plenty of opportunity to both explore and practise coaching skills. Feedback from the participants was very positive. People felt engaged, informed and more confident in their coaching abilities as a result of attending the conference and taking part in the sessions.”
