Developing High-Performing & Resilient Teams

Based in London and New York, Hedley May are experts in international executive search and senior leader placement for the world’s top corporations and financial institutions. Their professed mission is to improve the performance of their clients.

Hedley May sought support from Natures Coaching in collaboration with emintell, when they’d gone through a period of change and were looking to plan the next phase of their business maturity. As part of this, they were exploring how to strengthen their internal culture further, while ensuring that their strong company values continued to be a key focus.

What we did

Using our Optimal model for team resilience, we adopted a phased collaborative approach. First, we assessed Hedley May’s position through focus groups involving staff at all levels. This informed our planning for a team coaching event – paying attention to Hedley May’s values of excellence, courage and empathy.

Once the feedback was explored with them, the team members agreed themselves what areas to focus on. This all added to a sense of collective responsibility, an important attribute of any high-performing and resilient team.

We continued to provide ongoing remote guidance and support. Then, after a successful but challenging period in which Hedley May set up its New York office, the firm wanted to give their team an opportunity to:

  1. Re-visit and advance their earlier learning.
  2. Recognise the progress made, particularly with their great working environment (GWE) policy.
  3. Have more practical support with managing and responding to periods of high stress.

We collaborated with members of the GWE team to design and deliver a resilience masterclass, with the following key elements: –

  • Appreciative enquiry – enabling staff to explore individual and team progress in establishing and maintaining a “great working environment”, addressing the challenges and appreciating each other for the specific efforts they were making
  • Section on Stress – the science behind it, habitual responses, impacts on body, mind and performance
  • Section on Energy Management – a focus on the four main sources of personal energy, assessing their use and identifying ways to improve and maintain energy
  • Section on Self-efficacy – exploring techniques and approaches to improve personal performance, which is known to be linked to good levels of resilience
  • Action planning – inviting team members to ask, “what am I going to do differently?”, then capturing that input to maintain a high-performing and resilient team, aligned with their GWE

“I’ve already done several things differently today. I took the opportunity of a rare meeting-free day to work from home and I’ve also used the breathing exercise. We’re going to sit down as a team to consider how we make the positive messages hit home. Thanks again.

Impact and Benefits

The response from those involved was one of positive surprise that the collective team had such powerful discussions. Members realised they were having new conversations with each other, and they could see how this helped to build trust.

Staff felt we’d helped them look again at the balance between two of their values – Courage and Empathy – in considering how they communicated with each other. They were now able to develop some clear team goals to support their continuing development. A working committee of three team members was formed on the day, and they continue to take this invaluable work forward.

“I am really impressed with your approach, demonstrating high levels of understanding and sensitivity at all stages of the process – but particularly during facilitation. I have no hesitation in recommending Natures Coaching in collaboration with Emintell, as a high-quality provider of solutions to develop resilient and high performing teams.”
